How does your Pet qualify
For your pet to qualify under the PETS scheme it will have to meet certain conditions, these being (in this order):
Microchipped
Your pet must have a ISO microchip implanted, so that it can be properly identified.
Vaccinated
Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies after the microchip has been implanted.
There is no exemption to this requirement, even if your pet has a current rabies vaccination.
Blood tested.
After your pet has been vaccinated (but not before it is 12 weeks old), it must be blood tested (after a sufficient waiting period approximately 21 days.) to make sure that the vaccine has given it a satisfactory level of protection against rabies.
You must wait a period of 6 calendar months from the date the blood test was taken before you pet can enter the UK.
Passport.
Once you have completed all of the above, your vet will issue your pet with a passport.
Pre-Flight treatment
And finally Before your pet enters the UK, it must be treated against ticks and tapeworms not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before it is checked in with an approved transport company for its journey into the UK.
Other information.
For animals being prepared in an EU country, you should get an EU pet passport. If you are preparing your animal in a non-EU listed country you will need to obtain an official third country veterinary certificate.
To enter the UK, your pet should not have left the EU or any Qualifying country in the previous 6 months and your pet may not enter the UK under PETS until six calendar months have passed from the date that your vet took the blood sample which led to a satisfactory test result.
Once the vet has issued the Passport / official third country veterinary certificate and that six month period has passed, your pet may enter the UK.
Failure
Failure to comply with the requirements of the scheme as listed above, may cause delays on arrival, with the possibility of the pet going into quarantine, or being returned to the country of origin, all at the owner's cost.
The advice given on the requirements, is not official guidance, and to this end we cannot be held liable for any errors or omissions. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure all requirements are met in order for their pet to enter the UK under either the Pet travel Scheme or under Quarantine regulations.
